There are a number of things you need to take into account before you buy your wheelchair. First things first, you need to consider the specific needs of the user.
Each user will have different considerations. These can range from weight capacity, width required, type required and whether it will be used indoors, outdoors or both. You need to take the time to consider these factors because they can be very important and make a big difference to what you need.
When it comes to using a wheelchair, different types have different benefits. If you’re heading out on regular journeys, it’s likely you’ll need something you can easily store away in the car. Sometimes, public transport may be unavailable, so you’d need a wheelchair that’s capable of tackling longer trips in the chair itself.
We’re always here to help if you need guidance on making a decision, so don’t hesitate to contact a member of the Fenetic team if that’s the case.
When buying a wheelchair, you’re presented with multiple options to choose from and it can be difficult to find the right one. It’s important you take into consideration your specific needs because each wheelchair type has different benefits. You can choose from the following:
Bariatric Wheelchair: Bariatric wheelchairs are ideal for those who suffer from serious muscle weakness. They have a larger frame size providing the user with a more comfortable experience and additional support. The seats and the back of the chair come with additional reinforcement. They’re also built with a heavyweight vinyl/upholstery material providing the support required.
Electric Wheelchair: Electric wheelchairs are powered by a battery and electric motor and are perfect for covering longer distances. If you have to cover distances that you usually find tiring, they’re the ideal solution. They’re long lasting, sturdy and easy to control. You can fold them away for easy transport in cars and on public transport. They have easy to use joystick control and cushioned seating for supreme comfort during travel. Electric wheelchairs are your ideal solution for use on days out and for trips to the shops where public transport may not be available.
Folding Wheelchair: Folding wheelchairs make transport easy. They’re lightweight and ideal for use as a secondary or occasional use wheelchair. They have specially designed collapsible frames making them very easy to transport for holidays and shopping trips.
Lightweight Wheelchair: Lightweight wheelchairs are very similar to folding wheelchairs and are a great solution if you’re needing a wheelchair that easily folds away. Despite their lightweight frame, they’re incredibly robust and can support weight up to 18 stone. You can pretty much take them anywhere, whether that be to the shops in a car or even if you’re heading away on holiday.
Self-Propelled Wheelchair: Self-propelled wheelchairs differ from other types of transport wheelchair as they can be operated by the user, without the need for a carer. They have large rear wheels that allow the user to push the chair along themselves. This keeps you in full control of everything from the speed and direction that the chair moves in. They still have push handles on the back if you’d prefer a carer to push the chair along for you.
Transit Wheelchair: Transit wheelchairs come fitted with smaller wheels and handles and can be used by either the user or caregiver. Due to their size, transit wheelchairs are very easy to pack away into a car to be taken on days out. They hardly take up any space and can be easily folded back out once you reach your destination.
There are a number of wheelchair accessories available from memory foam cushions to waterproof cosy fleeces for the colder months. Accessories are there to make your trips as comfortable and as safe as possible. Padded long arm pads are there to provide your arm with additional comfort during long journeys and day trips. They also provide extra protection from general wear and tear. Elevated leg rests are available for those who need their legs elevated during journeys, giving maximum comfort and support.
There’s also a range of wheelchair ramps which can be easily assembled to help get around the house or gain access to areas with small steps. The ramps are all rust resistant and can be safely used in inclement weather conditions.
Wheelchairs come in a wide range of widths, all depending on the needs of the user. A standard wheelchair measures at around 41 inches in depth. The width depends on the style of the wheelchair. It’s important you take into account the width of doorways and gaps in your home before making your purchase.
Electric wheelchairs generally reach a speed of up to 4mph. This allows you to cover longer distances in a shorter amount of time with minimal physical strain for your body. If you feel you’d struggle to push a wheelchair along, then electric wheelchairs are an ideal solution for you.
Different wheelchairs are capable of handling different weights. If you’re wanting a lightweight wheelchair - they can generally take weight up to 18 stone. For the heavier wheelchair user, you’ll want to look at bariatric wheelchairs which are not only built with larger frames but some models can take weight up to 32 stone.
The All Terrain Outdoor Wheelchair is capable of managing grassy and off road terrain with considerable ease. It comes with large treaded pneumatic tyres which provide the user with additional comfort and gives the wheelchair extra grip on tricky grounds. It’s also incredibly easy to fold away for both storage in your home and transportation in a car.
